In 2023, AWESOME worked with the children of Newman Primary School to deliver STEAMED Up; a process-driven, artist-in-residency program that uses arts practice and creativity to more fully engage children with core curriculum and STEAMED subjects.
AWESOME collaborated with school leadership to co-design a strategic learning plan with educational and skill-based objectives. Over the course of the project, we worked with 44 amazing students aged 8-10 years. Students explored teamwork, resilience, and literacy skills over the year. Residencies covered songwriting, animation, projection mapping, story writing, storyboarding, filmmaking, photography, merchandising, and event management.
On the conclusion of the program participating students hosted the “Newmania” film festival and exhibition of works. Families and members of the community were invited into the school to purchase artworks created throughout the year (with special Newman dollars), walk the red carpet, and watch the films and animations created on earlier residencies.
Participants were very proud to share their creative endeavours and successes with the wider Newman community and their families. Thank you so much to Newman Primary School and the participating artists for making this program possible.
